    Lots of Classic stories

This free-book contained a lot of longer stories, more suited for an older audience. I was looking for shorter humorous stories that I could read to kids with an average age around 10y.o., but didn't think the stories in this book appropriate. Too long for attention span, and some contained a bit of horror. 3/5 E. Woodford (At Work) - See all my reviews, June 14, 2011

Great little book to break 'the usual' cycle

The focus of this book is truly to put the fun back into scouting. It is a quick read, filled with ideas for breaking out of doing 'the usual' for your troop meetings, camp outs, and while working on merit badges. I enjoyed it and as a Roundtable Commissioner, I think I'm going to pick up a couple extra copies to give out at our Boy Scout Roundtable.Fair warning, it is aimed at LDS SCouting, but with that said there are not very many of the ideas that are directed specifically for LDS troops. Many of the thoughts can be applied to any troop out there. I highly recommend it and the price is great. 5/5 Rodney L. Schulz Jr. - See all my reviews, August 22, 2011

Entertaining delivery of many great ideas

The first thing I liked about this book was that it was not a big book. It was a quick and easy read that I could pick up and read a chapter in whenever I had a free minute. Despite the size, however, it contained tons of ideas and tips for making Scouting activities more exciting and enjoyable for everyone involved. The book was arranged by topic - for example, there was a chapter on cooking, one on the patrol method, one on winter camping, etc. Each chapter had some humorous anecdotes to illustrate the point and leave the reader wishing he/she were in the troop that was having so much fun. The book was written by an LDS Scouter and was based on Boy Scouting experiences. However, LDS terms only came up a few times and were not related to the points made, and those points could be applied to other levels of Scouting. I found myself thinking of many ways the ideas could be utilized in a den or pack. This book would be useful to any Scouter on any level. In fact, I felt like... 5/5 A. Not a "survival kit", but still can be a usefull gadget.

Well, don't think this is a survival kit. It ain't. What we have here is a decent whistle (a good thing) with some other stuff. The mirror is too small, but the LED light could be handy. In a survival situation you should have 3 signaling tools- mirror, whistle and flashlight, and this handles all three, two of them fairly well. The compass is OK as long as you understand it's hardly for orienteering. The thermometer is more or less useless for any survival reasons. The magnifying glass could start a fire under ideal situations, or better, it can be used to spot that splinter. However, it goes around your neck, is lightweight, and it's something you won't feel silly carrying on a run along that well traveled trail you know so well. There are several versions of this thing, and this is one of the better ones.Carry some sort of firestarter, a Swiss army knife and a tiny 1st aid kit, and you're fine if you're not really going in the... 4/5 Wulfstan "wulfstan" (San Jose, CA United States) - See all my reviews, June 28, 2010

    Good not Great

I purchased mine several years ago and have found it to be useful. It is not the "ultimate" survival tool but worthy of having it. I placed a small amount of "lint" used as tinder in it for firestarter as well. The light is just enough for most purposes. The whistle works well and is loud enough. The compass is cheap but useable. It will get you in a general direction to a known highway or directional area.I bought several and placed them in my kids backpacks as well. The magnifier might start a fire with real good sunlight. The mirror is good but small. 4/5 MIO (Oklahoma) - See all my reviews This review is from: SE 7-in-1 Survival Whistle I purchased mine several years ago and have found it to be useful. Disappointing

I was very disappointed with this volume and I haven't yet decided to return it. For some reason, all the original diagrams and illustrations have been removed from the reprint -- even where they are referenced in the text. There is no TOC or index and or any use of bold or highlighted typefaces to even determine the beginning or end of a topic. The volume is poorly laid-out. For example, a 43-page listing of suggested materials at the end lists Title, Author and Publisher with no line breaks between the references. In fact, there isn't a line break or paragraph heading in the entire volume. It looks very much like a computer printout from the pre-desktop publishing era, before WYSIWYG typography. Please note, the original volume was NOT formatted this way, this was a very cheap reproduction of the original, unskillfully assembled with no effort at all going into the publishing process. This makes it useless as a reference book. 1/5 Frederick Moss - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) See the beginning for yourself!

This book is a time capsule from the beginning of the Boy Scouts in the United States. Ecology? The Boy Scouts were there in 1911. Animal rights? Ditto. Of course, the specifics in this century-old text may not match current viewpoints, but the Boy Scouts were global before Globalism became chic! I showed the ads to really old boy scouts-those who were boy scouts during the 1950's-and they were reminded of the changes.Don't use this book as a "how to" reference without first checking carefully. The advice on first aid includes procedures known to aggravate injuries-such as rubbing snow on frostbitten areas (page 272.) The section on constructing radio communications equipment (page 210) was written prior to the establishment of the Federal Communications Commission-in addition to needing licenses to build and operate the equipment, professional Morse Code operators are rare in the United States. Some of this book is still current, too. Good, Cheap

There's not much to say about this flag, it's good and it's cheap. It's just the World Scout design stamped onto a piece of polyester. But it's great! It flies in the least of winds, and can be attached anywhere. This is not the flag your going to pass onto your grandson someday, as it looks like something from the dollar store (You can see right through it when upclose, and the grommets aren't much to brag about), and for that matter it doesn't cost much more!I was really warry ordering from this "BC Novelies", but the flag arrived in a nice envelope, and in record time (2 days faster than Amazon Prime!)! 5/5 Libbo - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Buy, but do it elsewhere

This book is available at other websites (scoutstuff.org) for much less, and those profits go to scouting not to a company. This version of the handbook is the current one and is what should be used for requirements and rules. Unfortunately it is NOT a handbook. Most the information that should be in the book is missing. Instead, where you should find information about the BSA uniform or an identification guide for wildlife, you will find a line that tells you to go to bsahandbook.org. This might be up-to-date or cutting edge, but is completely useless when you are where a Boy Scout should need this information - outside, in the woods. If you want requirements and rules go to bsahandbook.org but if you want information the boys can use go buy an older version of the handbook. 2/5 Chris V. - See all my reviews This review is from: Boy Scout Handbook (The Centennial Edition) (Paperback) This book is available at other websites (scoutstuff.org) for much less, and those profits go to scouting not to a company. This version of the handbook is the current one and is what should be used for requirements and rules. Love the Spiral Binding

My son is hard on books, the spiral binding on this one really helps keep all the pages intact and connected to the spine. Scout books generally go thru a lot of abuse (taken along on campouts, rained on, etc...) I recommend the spiral bound edition. As to the content of the 11th edition, I think it is execellent. The new version is more visually appealing and readable than the one I used as a scout. 5/5 J. Harston (San Antonio, TX) - See all my reviews, May 18, 2009

    Great Resource

So first to join in with some of the other reviews, yes you should definitely buy the book elsewhere. The price on Amazon is outrageous. You can purchase it from scoutstuff.org for $14.99 plus $7.50 shipping, or you can walk into your local scout service center and buy it for $14.99 plus tax. The latter is going to be your best bet. That said, I would strongly, STRONGLY, urge anyone who is purchasing this book for a new boy scout to get the spiral bound edition. The boys will be opening this book and trying to get it to hold open to spots throughout the book ALL. THE. TIME. And most often in the back near the area where he records completed advancements. The binding will break quickly and pages will fall out. If they're the pages signed by leaders as record of completed advancement, and you lose the page, it can spell bad news. The spiral bound version of the handbooks are incredibly handy, for both the boys and the leaders. As for the book itself and its... 5/5 Scott Walker "middletownscouter" (Middletown, OH USA) - See all my reviews, April 10, 2012

    NOT the Boy Scout Handbook

I bought this thinking I was buying a boy scout handbook for my son, who is in Boy Scouts. Title looks right, but this is NOT what you want. 1/5 Fritz W. Berggren "cybertext2" (Santo Domingo) - See all my reviews, September 23, 2012

Very misleading - do not buy

As a Boy Scout HandbookWhen they state that this product is "the official handbook of the Boy Scouts of America", they omit that this is the original handbook, not the current handbook. They used deliberately ambiguous language to conceal this fact. They do not have copyright information or a publisher's page - I suspect whoever thought of the scam is ashamed to put their name on it.I'm guessing this is technically legal, with the original handbook's copyright expired, but do not buy this product. As a historical artifactThe diagrams are scanned poorly, and are small, blurry, and the text is nearly illegible. The words from within the diagram are then repeated after the diagram without any punctuation or indication as to where in the diagram they're from, making for bizarre reading until you figure out what they did. There is (of course) no discussion of the history of the handbook or indeed, any attempt to add value to this product at all. 1/5 Keith Mccullough - See all my reviews, September 30, 2012
