Interim Judaism, Jewish Thought in a Century of Crisis

Creator: Michael L. Morgan | 2001

In Interim Judaism, Michael L. Morgan traces the evolution of this shift in values, as expressed in the work of social thinkers, novelists, artists, and poets as well as philosophers and theologians at the beginning and end of the century.

About this book
Interim Judaism Jewish Thought in a Century of Crisis Michael L. Morgan Probes the impact of the 20th century on Jewish belief and practice. Confronting the challenges of the 20th century, from modernity and the Great War to the Holocaust and postmodern culture, Jewish thinkers have wrestled with such fundamental issues as redemption and revelation, eternity and history, messianism and politics. From the turn of the century through the 1920s, European Jewish intellectuals confronted alienation and the challenges of modernity by seeking secure grounds for a meaningful life. After the Holocaust and the fall of Nazism, the rich results of their thinking -- on topics such as transcendence, redemption, revelation, and politics -- were reinterpreted in an atmosphere of increasing disillusion and fragmentation. In Interim Judaism, Michael L. Morgan traces the evolution of this shift in values, as expressed in the work of social thinkers, novelists, artists, and poets as well as philosophers and theologians at the beginning and end of the century. Focusing on the problem of objectivity, the experience of the transcendent, and the relationship between redemption and politics, he argues that the outcome for contemporary Jews is a pragmatic style of religiosity that has abandoned traditional conceptions of Judaism and is searching and waiting for new ones, a condition that he describes as "interim Judaism." Michael L. Morgan is Professor of Philosophy and Jewish Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is author of Platonic Piety and Dilemmas in Modern Jewish Thought (Indiana University Press). He has edited The Jewish Thought of Emil Fackenheim; Classics in Moral and Political Theory; Jewish Philosophers and Jewish Philosophy (Indiana University Press); and A Holocaust Reader: Responses to the Nazi Extermination. With Paul Franks, he has translated and edited Franz Rosenzweig: Philosophical and Theological Writings. BUY THIS COLLECTION - it really is that simple

Buy this collection. At $.99 it is a steal and contains some excellent ‘firsts’ of several wonderful series. At $.99 you are saving more than $20.00 just to buy these e-books. GET THIS COLLECTION.Below are some short reviews of the individual stories and pieces:Mercedes Lackey – Moving Targets 4.5/5 stars. The book possesses typical Mercedes Lackey voice – fun characters in an interesting setting. At least, I think it does -it has been a long time since I have read any of Lackey’s work, so I don’t know if there is a larger continuum that the story fits in to, but it stands just fine on its own if it does.Essentially, this is a short mystery that, very quickly, evolves in to a classic ‘Scooby-Doo’ style hunt – right down to the talking pet and ridiculous conclusions. It is a lot of fun and makes an excellent opening for the collection. There are a couple of confusing notes, but for the... 5/5 Steven T. Well worth buying - a great introduction to some new authors!

Received a copy of this bundle in exchange for an honest review. Below are short reviews of each story.Mercedes Lackey – Moving Targets: 4 stars Since 1987, Mercedes Lackey has been one of my favorite authors and I have read all but one of her Valdemar stories (that one is on my table waiting). This story brings back one of my favorite special creatures – the kyree. Ryu forms a bond with one of the “I’m wearing white, shoot me now” Heralds and adds to the frustration that Elyn feels as she is training, aka babysitting, the 4 Herald trainees. Anyone who is a Scooby Doo fan will really enjoy this story and, if you have never read this author, this is a good place to start.Michael G. Manning – The Blacksmith’s Son: 5 stars – This was my first story by this author and all I can say is, “Wow”. From the first sentence, he draws you in and holds your attention past the ending – leaving you... 4/5 Stacy L. - See all my reviews This review is from: FIERCE: Sixteen Authors Of Fantasy (Kindle Edition) Received a copy of this bundle in exchange for an honest review. GREAT Reads!!! Too many good books for only .99!!!!!

I have to start by saying that I am a very honest reviewer. I do not give 5 stars unless I think it deserves it! I am not done reading the bundle, but I am looking forward to what the next story is!! I cannot wait to read a few of these that are farther into the bundle, but I am reading them in order and have not skipped anything. I have only read one of the authors in this bundle before, and it is why I am reading this one! Of course, her book is close to the end and I have not yet read it! I do not give any spoilers in this review. I only give my opinion on the story. I hope this helps you decide!!!Moving Targets by Mercedes Lackey- 1 out of 5 starsEven though this was the first book of the bundle, I was not deterred. The writing was confusing and I am still not sure what the companion was, but that was not the worst part. It was like reading a Scooby Doo story!!! It even ended that way! My advice, skip the first book, the rest are really good!The... 4/5 Day (Louisiana) - See all my reviews This review is from: FIERCE: Sixteen Authors Of Fantasy (Kindle Edition) I have to start by saying that I am a very honest reviewer. A Timely but Unscholarly Book on Fascinating History

This book is an exploration into the "Islamic Golden Age," which is when the Middle East was a wellspring of intellectual flourishing. The second half of the 8th century to the 12th century in the Near East is a keystone of the intellectual history of human civilization. Many great thinkers of this time period, such as Ibn Rushd (Averroes), Ibn Sina (Avicenna) and Al-Kindi are responsible for translating, preserving and adding to the wealth of knowledge created by the many great intellectuals of Classical Greece and the Roman Republic. During the Islamic Golden Age, there were countless advancements in medicine, astronomy, mathematics, optics, engineering and surgery while the Western world intellectually wallowed in the Dark Ages. Because many Muslim scholars kept the Aristotelian tradition of recognizing that the universe can be known through reason, it was possible for the Western world to eventually rediscover these values (by gaining access to the Islamic works) and to ignite the... 4/5 Doug (Washington D.C. area) - See all my reviews This review is from: Lost History: The Enduring Legacy of Muslim Scientists, Thinkers, and Artists (Paperback) This book is an exploration into the "Islamic Golden Age," which is when the Middle East was a wellspring of intellectual flourishing. "The first Muslim golden ages are gone ... new ones are being created"

The West and the world owe the Islamic world much: in medicine, ethics, metaphysics, mathematics, astronomy, poetry, architecture, literature and music Islam has had a profound influence. Just how deep the connections are, and how great the debt owed is the basis for Morgan's book. After presenting a brief history of the first centuries of Islam, the richness, depth, breadth and variety of Islamic thought is presented, convincingly arguing that Muslim philosophers and scientists are inheiritors of the Greco-Roman world as much (if not more than) Europe, and that these thinkers pushed intellectual boundaries to the benefit of everyone. These details make the book, as the connections between 9th and 10th century Islam and the present are profound. However, Morgan has a tendency to dramatize and personify history, which I though detracted from the effectiveness of his point. To write about the internal thoughts of ibn Sina would be fine for fiction, but have no... 4/5 doc peterson (Portland, Oregon USA) - See all my reviews, August 8, 2007

    Freshening perceptions --

This book has an articulated, worthy purpose: to bring to the general reader some understanding of the richness of Islamic civilization. The details of the work of Moslem writers, scientists and artists have been lost to general perception in Western history, yet the accomplishments of Islamic society, from the seventh century on, have flowed into and enriched the Judeo-Christian world. In fact, the three traditions -- Christian, Jewish, and Islamic -- are inextricably braided. The Islamic world gave rise to some of the earliest libraries, universities and hospitals and, at its best, has encouraged an idea of civic tolerance that permits the development of the talents of all, whatever the religious orientation. In Lost History, Michael Morgan presents a dense and richly detailed overview of the flowering of Islamic culture. While he gives some attention to religious controversies and some to war and conquest, Morgan's primary purpose is to illuminate the achievements of... 5/5 Eclectic Reader "AMM" (Anchorage, AK USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) INSPIRING

If this were possible, I would give this book six stars.Levinas is not easy to understand. All the more so this book deserves praise for providing a comprehensive and reliable introduction to the original thinking of Levinas, while taking into account a variety of interpretations. I could do without the strained effort by the author to include "animals as well as concern for the earth and its resources" within the scope of the norms postulated by Levinas (p. 63, fn. 15), while humanity ignores much more basic ethical imperatives. In short, according to Levinas, ethics is fundamental to human existence as paradigmatically expressed in face-to-face relationships, the "faces" of others imposing on each and every one of us an unconditional duty to help and take care of the needs of "others." My own writings add imperatives, such as trying to understand the world and ourselves; facilitating and engaging in peak creativity; and, primarily, taking care of the future of the... 5/5 Yehezkel Dror (Jerusalem Israel) - See all my reviews This review is from: The Cambridge Introduction to Emmanuel Levinas (Paperback) If this were possible, I would give this book six stars.Levinas is not easy to understand. If you want to make money with Morgans, you need this little book.

Before I talk about the contents, a word about the design of the book. It's compact. I love that. You can take it to shows or out to buy coins or wherever. Moreover, if you're just sitting at your computer and on ebay looking for that perfect VAM, it's easy to have on your lap or at your side and refer to quickly. And, it's spiral bound. You can't ask more of a book than that!I picked my copy up on ebay. Got a good buy on it. I'm new to VAMs and didn't want to get taken. Additionally, I want to really understand VAMs. They're most interesting but there's a lot to learn. Don't you agree? Now, to the contents. The book starts out with some informative short articles about VAM collecting. It also tells you how to use the book. You should read that. It won't take but a few minutes and it's well worth it.Then the Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties (The VAM Keys) are listed according to year. Informational but a size disappointment

0 3/5 Steve - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys 4th Edition (Spiral-bound) At first I was very diappointed in this book and was going to return it. It's rather pricy for a spiral bound softcover book, and it's TINY (only about 4" x 5"). You can carry it in a shirt pocket no problem, so I figured the print, pictures, etc. would be miniscule as well. Fortunately, the book is packed with helpful information and is surprisingly not too small to read. There's over 100 pages and the information is both well-placed and coded well for ease of use. The pictures are black and white, but I think that's actually helpful for this book, as silver coins tend to lose details in color due to toning or lighting. So although I thought this book was going to be a dog, I am glad to say I was wrong about its content. I do hope the authors will print a larger, hardcover version someday for the price they charge, but other than that this book is a decent buy for the money. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 4, 2010
