Interim Judaism, Jewish Thought in a Century of Crisis

Creator: Michael L. Morgan | 2001

In Interim Judaism, Michael L. Morgan traces the evolution of this shift in values, as expressed in the work of social thinkers, novelists, artists, and poets as well as philosophers and theologians at the beginning and end of the century.

About this book
Interim Judaism Jewish Thought in a Century of Crisis Michael L. Morgan Probes the impact of the 20th century on Jewish belief and practice. Confronting the challenges of the 20th century, from modernity and the Great War to the Holocaust and postmodern culture, Jewish thinkers have wrestled with such fundamental issues as redemption and revelation, eternity and history, messianism and politics. From the turn of the century through the 1920s, European Jewish intellectuals confronted alienation and the challenges of modernity by seeking secure grounds for a meaningful life. After the Holocaust and the fall of Nazism, the rich results of their thinking -- on topics such as transcendence, redemption, revelation, and politics -- were reinterpreted in an atmosphere of increasing disillusion and fragmentation. In Interim Judaism, Michael L. Morgan traces the evolution of this shift in values, as expressed in the work of social thinkers, novelists, artists, and poets as well as philosophers and theologians at the beginning and end of the century. Focusing on the problem of objectivity, the experience of the transcendent, and the relationship between redemption and politics, he argues that the outcome for contemporary Jews is a pragmatic style of religiosity that has abandoned traditional conceptions of Judaism and is searching and waiting for new ones, a condition that he describes as "interim Judaism." Michael L. Morgan is Professor of Philosophy and Jewish Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington. He is author of Platonic Piety and Dilemmas in Modern Jewish Thought (Indiana University Press). He has edited The Jewish Thought of Emil Fackenheim; Classics in Moral and Political Theory; Jewish Philosophers and Jewish Philosophy (Indiana University Press); and A Holocaust Reader: Responses to the Nazi Extermination. With Paul Franks, he has translated and edited Franz Rosenzweig: Philosophical and Theological Writings. Laughed like crazy

It's the buddy-road-trip movie for the boomers. Four old friends (with some old issues between) them take off for a raucous weekend in Sin City. The emphasis here is on "old" - but the 60-70 crowd still has plenty of life left in them. An improbable stroke of luck near the start of their outing makes wild extravagance almost plausible, but that just makes it more fun. Things like over-attentive adult children, mid-life (maybe late-life) crises, getting back to wild times after a few decades of married peace and quiet, sorrow and recovery from being widowed - all carried off flawlessly. And, it doesn't hurt to be reminded that "retired" and "dead" are different words for good reason. Every decade is a good one, or can be, just not all in the same ways.BTW, if someone pans the movie, check whether they're under 50. If so, they just might not have enough life behind them to appreciate what's going on.-- wiredweird, reviewing the release to... 5/5 wiredweird "wiredweird" (Earth, or somewhere nearby) - See all my reviews, November 14, 2013

Vegas is the true star of this movie

"Last Vegas" (2013 release; 95 min.) brings the story of 4 guys in their late sixties (played by Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline) going to Las Vegas for a weekend in preparation of the wedding of the Michael Douglas character to a woman less than half his age. As the movie opens, the characters are shown as young kids growing up in Brooklyn, with also a young girl whom one of them would eventually marry. The movie then goes "58 Years Later", and we get introduced to each of the 4 guys, all of them dealing with a predicament of sorts. Not that it matters a lot, as it isn't long before the action shifts to Vegas where they are determined to have a grand time. They also get to know an older female jazz singer (played by Mary Steenbergen). To tell you more would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.Couple of comments: I admit that I probably wouldn't have caught this movie but for the fact that... 4/5 Paul Allaer (Cincinnati) - See all my reviews, December 31, 2013

If you want to make money with Morgans, you need this little book.

Before I talk about the contents, a word about the design of the book. It's compact. I love that. You can take it to shows or out to buy coins or wherever. Moreover, if you're just sitting at your computer and on ebay looking for that perfect VAM, it's easy to have on your lap or at your side and refer to quickly. And, it's spiral bound. You can't ask more of a book than that!I picked my copy up on ebay. Got a good buy on it. I'm new to VAMs and didn't want to get taken. Additionally, I want to really understand VAMs. They're most interesting but there's a lot to learn. Don't you agree? Now, to the contents. The book starts out with some informative short articles about VAM collecting. It also tells you how to use the book. You should read that. It won't take but a few minutes and it's well worth it.Then the Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties (The VAM Keys) are listed according to year. 0 3/5 Steve - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties: The VAM Keys 4th Edition (Spiral-bound) At first I was very diappointed in this book and was going to return it. It's rather pricy for a spiral bound softcover book, and it's TINY (only about 4" x 5"). You can carry it in a shirt pocket no problem, so I figured the print, pictures, etc. would be miniscule as well. Fortunately, the book is packed with helpful information and is surprisingly not too small to read. There's over 100 pages and the information is both well-placed and coded well for ease of use. The pictures are black and white, but I think that's actually helpful for this book, as silver coins tend to lose details in color due to toning or lighting. So although I thought this book was going to be a dog, I am glad to say I was wrong about its content. I do hope the authors will print a larger, hardcover version someday for the price they charge, but other than that this book is a decent buy for the money. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 4, 2010

0 5/5 Monika (Chicago) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: The Riches - Season 1 (DVD) I originally started watching this only because Eddie Izzard was in it, simply because I find him to be amazing. However, the show in itself is just phenomenal. It's very quirky, off beat and definitely filled with a dark comedy aspect. I don't know if everybody will like it, but if that's your style, you should definitely check it out. And even those who may not like it, have to at least respect how clever and original the show is. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 16, 2008

Have you met the new neighbors?

The Riches are really the Malloys, a family of Travelers (Irish gypsies) who have stumbled on the con of a lifetime. Things have not been going well for the Malloys lately. Dad, Wayne Malloy (Eddie Izzard) has been trying to keep the family going while Mom, Dahlia (Minnie Driver) has been serving time for a con gone wrong but hasn't been doing so well. While at the Travelers' camp the family gets into even more trouble putting the whole family on the run in their battered, old RV and causing them to cross paths with the Riches, Doug and Sherene and end up taking over their lives. At first the Malloys are planning to run a quick con but soon they fall into the 'buffer' lifestyle they had always scorned. The parents decide to enroll their three kids, son Cael, daughter Didi and ...er...Sam into school. As time passes and the family finds they can survive in the buffer world and realize that the Traveler world is not the safe haven they had always found it. As Season One ends the... 5/5 Jeanne Tassotto (Trapped in the Midwest) - See all my reviews, March 10, 2008

They're travelling in an RV when they are witness to a car crash, and making a long story short, they end up assuming the identities of a wealthy family, the Riches, and move to an upscale neighborhood in Palm Beach Florida. Keep it coming!

I just keep listening to this album over and over again. I have been waiting forever for two things--1. for more of Frank's work to become available on CD/MP3 and 2. for Frank to work with Linda Eder again. I have not been disappointed, what with Linda Eder's album Now, the Dracula concept recording, and now Tears from Heaven.Frank Wildhorn truly has the ability to write song melodies like almost no one else; like the songs of Paul Gordon and Stephen Schwartz, each of Frank's songs on this album is a gem in itself. In contrast to many Broadway-style composers where maybe only one or two songs are worth remembering, almost all of the songs on this album draw you in, deepen your knowledge of the characters, and capitalize on every artistic strength of the performer. With only one exception, (i.e. "The First Time I saw Paris"), all of the songs on this album weave a great story even without the dialogue. Best available introductory reader to the history of political theory / philosophy

This collection offers the best quality for the price. I plan to assign it for my introduction to political philosophy course. No reader of this size will be able to cover everything. Indeed, given the sheer breadth of what must be covered omissions are inevitable. But given these constraints, the excerpts are extremely intelligently chosen. The editor, Michael Morgan furnishes lucid and pithy introductions that provide historical and ideational contexts for a selection of readings that favor depth over the superficial and hyperactive breadth of some other volumes. Included in this volume are often the full classic texts authored by thinkers within the primary traditions of Western political and moral thought, including: Sophocles, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Epictetus, Augustine, Aquinas, Machiavelli, Hobbes, Locke, Hume, Rousseau, Kant, Mill, Marx, Nietzsche, and Weber. And could you get a better promotion than this from the back flap?: No less than Alasdair... 5/5 Ely Black - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) 4 1/2 Stars actually - This DVD is a bargain!

At the time that I am writing this review I see 140 of these DVDs listed used starting at $2.98. I would consider it a bargain for 3 times that!To the movie:I have not read the Alex Cross novels, so I am not able to comment on the movies based on them being faithful or not to the book. I HAVE seen both "Along Came A Spider" and "Kiss the Girls" and I enjoyed "Spider" much more, even though KTG was a good stab at the thriller genre.Morgan Freeman inhabits Alex Cross more completely, and I suspect that my appreciation of his performance was a combination of his wonderfully intelligent acting and Lee Tamahori's direction. This version of Cross is intelligent, compassionate, brave, and scarcely takes a wrong step. He'd be a good teacher and a good person to go get a beer with. And if some psychotic killer were on your trail - he's the guy you'd want tracking the killer.*WARNING! Silence of the Lambs Spoiler in this paragraph!*The writers... 5/5 Mark J. Convoluted Plot

It seems as though I am in the minority with this film. I enjoyed the plot twists, though you had to follow them carefully. If you were watching you could, in theory, figure out who the bad guys are, though you really do not have all the facts to truly figure out every detail, somewhat like a Sherlock Holmes story. Our story focuses on one Gary Soneji (Michael Wincott), who has carefully planned to kidnap the daughter of U.S. Senator Hank Rose, unconvincingly played by Michael Moriarty. The point of the kidnapping is not to kidnap Megan (Mika Boreem), but to get access to a foreign diplomat's son, who is good friends with Megan. Mr. Soneji is, as might be guessed, a bit of a wacko. He wants Dr. Alex Cross (Morgan Freeman), a famous profiler, to chronicle the battle of wits between them. Ultimately there is a showdown between the two of them, but the showdown does not reveal the location of Megan. The plot twists and thickens more, and yet, there were clues in several... 4/5 Lonnie E. "I am living proof, that a mind is a terrible thing"

I have to admit that I never quite understand why a director would decide to make a movie of a perfectly good suspense/mystery story (a best seller no less) and proceed to make wholesale modifications to the plot. It almost guarantees that a good piece of the audience will dislike the film simply because it diverges from the book and never even notice that it is a good film all on its own.And it is a good film. Morgan Freeman does a superb job of portraying Detective Alex Cross as he tries to peel away the layers of a kidnapping that gets away from everyone - kidnapper and police alike. Gary Soneji(Michael Wincott), a teacher at a posh school for the children of the powerful, decides to improve his social standing by kidnapping Megan Rose (Mika Boorem), a senator's daughter. He has everything worked out in detail, including getting Cross out of of semi-retirement, in order to demonstrate Soneji's brilliance.Joined by Jezzie Flannigan (Monica Potter). who... 4/5 Marc Ruby™ "The Noh Hare™" (Warren, MI USA) - See all my reviews, July 22, 2005
